What Is a UV Water Disinfection System?

A UV water disinfection system uses ultraviolet light to tackle and eliminate microbial contamination in water. It has four components that are essential for the disinfection process:

  • The reaction chamber: This is the stainless steel structure that houses the other three components. The water purification process takes place in this chamber.
  • The UV lamp: The UV lamp emits UV-C light needed for the disinfection process. This light usually has to be of a specific germicidal wavelength to destroy the targeted microorganism’s DNA effectively. Once its DNA is destroyed, the organism has no way of reproducing, functioning, or causing diseases, rendering it harmless.
  • The quartz sleeve: This structure protects the UV lamp. It is a cylindrical glass tube that the lamp is inserted into to prevent it from having direct contact with water.
  • Ballast/controller unit: This component provides and regulates the electrical supply for the UV lamp. It determines the intensity of the UV lamp’s radiation.

Microorganism types affected by UV disinfection are bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, molds, and algae.

UV water disinfection systems are known for their effectiveness. Hence they are often used not only for purifying drinking water but also for wastewater treatment and process water disinfection.
