SimPure Y7P-BW – Key Features

The SimPure Y7P-BW applies the following 4-stage filtration process.

  1. The first stage is a polypropylene sediment and carbon block composite pre-filter that traps tiny particles like sand, silt, and dirt. It further improves water quality and protects the RO membrane by reducing chlorine and organic chemicals.
  2. The second stage is the reverse osmosis membrane. It filters most water impurities, including dangerous ones like lead (98.46%), chromium 6 (99.28%), arsenic (99.65%), PFOA (98.75%), PFOS (98.3%), and microorganisms.
  3. Finally, there’s a UV post-filter that neutralizes harmful microorganisms. According to SimPure, the UV post-filter effectively disinfects water and eliminates 99.9% of viruses, bacteria, and germs.

This filtration process is pretty standard for an RO system, although most models use a carbon post-filter rather than UV light. This is not a problem with the SimPure, however, because the water isn’t stored in a butyl-lined tank, so there won’t be any taste issues.

The SimPure’s filtration is also pretty fast, and it holds 0.45 gallons in the pure water reservoir, so even if you run out of purified water, it won’t take much time to refill.

How about installation? Good news: You only need to plug the system in and prime the filters. Then, simply fill the removable 1.3-gallon feed water tank. The wastewater is returned to the feed tank and needs to be discarded. You can dispense water using the touch display (there’s an option to dispense 6/12/15 oz of water or choose continuous flow).

The touch display also has the following functions:

  • Water change reminder
  • Water shortage reminder
  • Filter replacement reminder (a steady light means the filter is 90% exhausted, and flashing lights and beeping mean the filter is 100% exhausted).
  • One-touch flushing function

SimPure filters last about six months and cost $120 in annual replacements which is totally fine. It has a 30-day return policy and a 1-year warranty (register your product to enjoy an extra year of product warranty).

Alexa’s Video Review

Alexa is one of our inhouse video content producers, and she has ordered and tested the SimPure Y7P-BW Reverse Osmosis System for us. In other words, she set up the system with her own hands and used it in her home for several weeks to gain invaluable first-hand experience and insights. She even sent an unfiltered and a filtered water sample to a lab for direct comparison. Alexa has documented the entire process and shares her opinion on the SimPure Y7P-BW in the video below:

Installation was an A+. And then of course the biggest pro is just that the water tastes good. (…) My husband enjoyed using this in his office. He liked the sleek design (…). He liked being able to just put his cup under it and press the button. (…) I’m gonna give this water filter a 4 out of 5.

SimPure Reverse Osmosis Pros

Most importantly, for what you get the SimPure Y7P-BW is very affordable, especially when on discount.

We also like that the SimPure Y7P-BW uses a UV post-filter. This is a feature we rarely see and it can help disinfect the water.

Then, the system itself is easy to install, use, and maintain. (Technically, it is installation-free. You only need to plug it in and enjoy access to clean water). Filters can be replaced within 3 seconds.

What’s more, we have a 4:1 pure-to-drain ratio, which means only 20% of the input water is wasted. This is a HUGE improvement over other RO systems (the standard RO system without pump wastes an ungodly 75-80% of feed water).

Did I mention that the system is made with BPA-free materials?

What Contaminants Are Being Removed?

The SimPure was tested against NSF Standard 58 by SGS. Here are some of the reduction rates:

  • Lead – 98.46%
  • Mercury – 98.34%
  • Copper – 99.5%
  • Barium – 99.95%
  • Selenium – 95.14%
  • Chlorate – 96.09%
  • Total Coliforms 99.99%
  • PFOS – 98.3%
  • PFOA – 98.75%
  • Fluoride – 97.28%
  • TDS – 98.64%
  • Turbidity – 99.47%
  • Chlorine – 99.45%
  • Nitrates – 96.26%
  • Arsenic – 99.65%
  • Cadmium – 99.27%
  • Chromium 6 – 99.28%

According to SimPure, the Y7P-BW also removes:

  • VOCs
  • Taste, Odor
  • Pesticides, Drug Residue
  • Disinfection Byproducts
  • Nitrites

Installation

Again, this SimPure RO is installation-free, so there’s no cause for worry. Here’s how to set it up:

Please consider these instructions as a general guideline. Always make sure to check and follow your user manual before getting started.
  1. Choose a suitable spot on your countertop and place the drip tray under the outlet (there should be enough space at the back for easy access). Open the feed water tank and remove the water tank.
  2. Fill the tank with tap water and carefully place it back in the system.
  3. Plug the system into an electrical outlet and turn it on (you will hear two beeps. The flushing and reset indicators will also be on for a short period).
  4. Next, you’ll need to flush the system. To do this, empty the internal pure water reservoir and push the “flushing” button. Allow the system to filter and push the flushing button again when the “filtering” indicator light goes off. Keep flushing the system until the “Change Water” indicator light flashes.

Maintenance

Replacing old filters is fast, uncomplicated, and pocket-friendly; replacements cost $120 a year. Here’s how to change your filters every 6 months or 528 gallons:

  1. Unplug the system.
  2. Remove and empty the feed water tank, lift each filter cartridge from the bottom, and remove it with a counterclockwise turn.
  3. Fit the filter cartridge into position and turn it clockwise to click it in place.
  4. Refill the feed water tank and place it in the system.
  5. Plug the system in.
  6. Reset the filter change reminder. To do this, push the reset button for 3 seconds (until you hear a beep), then push the reset button again to choose the filter you just changed.
  7. Again, hold the reset button for 3 seconds. You hear 3-beeps and the system is all set and ready for use again.

NSF and Other Certifications

SimPure says their Y7P-BW model has been NSF-certified for structural integrity and material safety, but we couldn’t find this certification online.

SimPure RO Cons

The SimPure has its downsides. For one, the company says it’s been NSF 58 certified for structural integrity and material safety, but we couldn’t find this certification online. Also, the SimPure was tested against NSF 58 by SGS, but we would’ve preferred official NSF certifications.

Additionally, the system has a relatively short filter life and reportedly makes some noise when the motor starts. Some users also complained about their unit going bad after a few months and of the filtration being less than satisfactory.

The AquaTru is our top choice for reverse osmosis systems. It’s an installation-free countertop model with a 4-stage filtration process that’s been tested and certified against 5 NSF/ANSI standards: 42, 53, 58, 401, and P473. The results say it removes close to 80 contaminants! That’s pretty impressive in itself and guarantees clean drinking water. The SimPure pales in comparison – it’s only NSF-tested.

Here are some reduction rates for the AquaTru:

  • Chlorine – 96.6%
  • VOCs – 95% to more than 99%
  • Chromium 6 – 97.2%
  • TDS – 87.1%
  • Cyst – 99.99%
  • Fluoride – 93.5%
  • Lead – 99.1%
  • Radium 226/228 – 96.4%
  • BPA – 99%
  • Several trace pharmaceuticals and pesticides – 86.7%-96.6%
  • PFOA, PFOS – 97.5%

The AquaTru is easy to use (it’s super easy to set up, and you can get it running in less than ten minutes). Filtration is also fast, and the system has a space-saving design. It has an 80% recovery rate (so only ⅕ of the feed water actually goes to waste, just like the SimPure).

To our delight, the AquaTru uses BPA and BPS-free Tritan plastic only.

Unfortunately, we read some reviews about leaks due to design flaws. There have also been complaints about units that went bad after only a few months of use. We didn’t experience any of these issues, though. Another thing to consider is that the AquaTru is more expensive to purchase than the SimPure, but costs around the same to maintain (~$100-120 every year).

The next system is the Waterdrop G3, a tankless, space-saving, BPA-free, under sink RO system that filters water on demand.

Its 4 filter stages are backed by NSF certifications/testing. The Waterdrop G3 is certified against NSF standard 58 for TDS reduction. It’s also been tested (not certified) against NSF standards 42, 53, 58, and 401 for the removal of chlorine (99%), fluoride (99%), arsenic (99%), VOCs (up to 99%), nitrate (98%), chromium 6 (99%), and PFOA/PFOS (99%), and a bunch of other contaminants.

We have a 0.42 gpm flow rate thanks to an internal pump. The implication? You never run out of filtered water. The presence of an internal pump also reduces the wastewater dramatically to only about 33% of the input water (a bit more than with the AquaTru and SimPure).

The Waterdrop is easy to install but requires proper under sink installation. There’s a smart faucet (with LED lights and sound) that tells you when to change old filters. The system also has a TDS monitoring panel that displays your filter’s current state (so you ALWAYS know where your filters stand).

The filters last a fair amount of time— 6 to 24 months or 550 and 2,200 gallons. Filter replacement takes little effort (it’s completely tool-free, and cartridges can be removed and installed with a single turn).

Waterdrop offers a money-back satisfaction guarantee that lets you return your system within the first 30 days of purchase if you’re unhappy with it. There’s also a 1-year manufacturer warranty, but this only applies if you use municipal water.

As with everything, the Waterdrop G3 has its cons. Firstly, some users complained about their units making unpleasant noises even when not in use. Then, it costs more than the SimPure to purchase and a bit more to maintain ($145 a year).

Final verdict: The AquaTru has our number one spot. The SimPure is another solid product. It’s a bit cheaper but lacks NSF certifications. The Waterdrop comes third here. But it isn’t bad for an under sink system. In fact, it’s pretty effective, tankless, fast, and produces relatively little wastewater.
