NSF Certifications
When reviewing water filters, we like to rely on NSF testing and certifications by independent laboratories which guarantee that a certain model does indeed perform as advertised. In a nutshell:
- NSF standard 42 tests for chlorine reduction and water aesthetics.
- Standard 53 was established for contaminants with health effects – think heavy metals.

Whether or not you need a water filter depends on if, which, and how many contaminants are present in your local water source. - Criteria Selection: We developed a list of 20 attributes to evaluate all products against, based on our years of experience and research.
- Product Compilation: We gathered a comprehensive list of over 100 water filters available online, including both familiar and new options.
- Thorough Assessment: We carefully examined product manuals, descriptions, third-party certifications, and warranties. We also conducted interviews with some of the brands to assess their support level and address questions as potential customers. In the end, we had narrowed down our list to 25 systems.
- User Feedback Analysis: To ensure only the best filters were included, we searched various platforms for feedback and third-party ratings from real users, while disregarding any fraudulent or misleading information.
- Hands-on Testing: At this stage, we had 11 products remaining. We ordered and used 7+ of them on a suitable water supply to gain firsthand experience (precisely following manufacturer instructions for setup and priming). We thoroughly evaluated each water filter, considering factors such as footprint, ergonomics, flow rates, and unfiltered vs filtered water taste and odor (blindfolded). Each system operated for a minimum of 2 weeks, leaving no detail unobserved.
- Lab Testing: To assess real-life contaminant reduction rates, we conducted our own laboratory testing using services like Tap Score and ETR Laboratories. This provided objective data to support our evaluations.
- Analysis and Presentation: We processed all gathered information, making it easily accessible.
- Independent and Fact-Checked: It is important to note that all information and ratings presented in our reviews are independent and unbiased. Additionally, our content undergoes professional fact-checking to ensure accuracy. Buddhini Dolapihilla, MBSS played a vital role in assessing claims of contamination reduction. This involved verifying online NSF/ANSI and CSA certifications, as well as meticulously reviewing lab reports and other test data.
