EcoPure ECOP30 – Key Features

With the EcoPure ECOP30, you get a 3-stage or rather 4-stage RO filtration process that can take care of a wide range of contaminants. The stages are:

  1. Sediment + activated carbon block pre-filter: improves taste and odor, and removes sand, silt, dirt, other sediments, organics, and chlorine.
  2. Reverse osmosis membrane: reduces dissolved solids and organic matter.
  3. Sediment + activated carbon block post-filter: improves taste and smell of water, removes sand, silt, dirt, other sediments, organics, and chlorine. Polishes water after it has been sitting in the storage tank.

In summary, this is the standard filtration process used by many reverse osmosis systems and it has proven to be effective. In fact, the EcoPure ECOP30 is proven to be effective based on its 2 NSF certifications – standards 42 and 58 – more on that below.

What’s more, there’s a filter change indicator light on the faucet. Filter life is 6 months to 3 years, and we estimate $100-140 in annual replacement cost.

The system also comes with a 1-year warranty, which can optionally be extended to a lifetime warranty which is great for peace of mind – you just need to register your product online.

EcoPure ECOP30 Pros

  • NSF-backed contaminant reduction.
  • Reminder light on the faucet lets you know when it’s time to change a filter.
  • Easy to change filters without even having to shut off water supply.
  • Reasonable yearly filter replacement cost.

Installation

Installing this EcoPure reverse osmosis is pretty simple and DIY-friendly, so as long as you are handy with tools you should be able to figure this out.

Please consider these instructions as a general guideline. Always make sure to check and follow your user manual before getting started.

Here are the tools you’ll need:

  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Philips Screwdriver
  • Flathead Screwdriver
  • Tape Measure
  • Drill & Drill Bits
  • Pipe Wrench

Before you begin, make sure you have the original manual handy – always refer to it for detailed step-by-step instructions!

  1. Shut off cold water supply.
  2. Install the cold water supply fitting between the valve and the system.
  3. Find a suitable location for the reverse osmosis drain. It should be on a vertical or horizontal piece of the drain piping, and not downstream from the garbage disposal. You can also use an existing drain.
  4. Install the drain adaptor. Use the provided bracket and screw it onto the pipe. You will have to drill a hole through the pipe.
  5. Install the filter assembly: remove the cover, find the mounting slots, and drill holes through the wall to hang the setup from.
  6. Install the storage tank. Use thread sealing tape to improve the connection.
  7. Install the reverse osmosis faucet. You may have to drill a hole through your countertop if you can’t reuse an existing one.
  8. Install the faucet electronics, including the LED indicator and battery.
  9. Connect all tubing.
  10. Flush the system, test it, and check for leaks.

The Package (Parts)

  • RO Assembly
  • Water Storage Tank
  • Drain Adapter
  • Parts Bag (Hanger Brackets, Eye Dropper, Water Supply Fitting, Tank Connector)
  • Tubing
  • Nitrate/Nitrite Test Kit
  • Coin Battery

Maintenance

Replacing the filters is simple – they use a streamlined twist-and-screw system that makes it very easy to replace each individual filter without even having to shut off the water. Filters should be replaced according to the following schedule:

  • Regular filters: every 6 months.
  • Reverse osmosis membrane: every 1-3 years.

This comes down to around $100 – $140 per year, which is acceptable.

You will also have to change the battery for the LED indicator every 6 months.

And as mentioned before, there is a reminder light on the faucet that tells you when filter replacements are due.

NSF and Other Certifications

The EcoPure ECOP30 RO system comes with 2 NSF certifications: for standards 42 and 58.

  • NSF 42: chlorine reduction, taste and odor reduction.
  • NSF 58: arsenic (pentavalent) (<=300 ppb), barium, cadmium, chromium (hexavalent), chromium (trivalent), copper, cyst, fluoride, lead, nitrate/nitrite, radium 226/228, selenium, TDS, and turbidity reduction.

Earlier Product Versions

To our knowledge, there aren’t any earlier product versions.

Cons

  • Recovery rate of only 21.2%, which means that around 80% of water goes to waste – that may be standard for similar systems, but it’s still a lot, and the only way to improve it would be to add a pump.
  • We would have appreciated extra testing for additional contaminants, especially organics.
  • Some users report occasional mix-ups with the package contents.

EcoPure ECOP30 Review: Our Verdict + Best for

Not a bad product overall, especially given the NSF certifications. Wastes too much water compared to some other similarly priced models. Still, a relatively okay choice if you can’t afford a more expensive system. 4 stars!

The AquaTru in particular is a fantastic system. It’s a countertop RO that requires no installation at all, and it carries an impressive 5 NSF/ANSI certifications for standards 42, 53, 58, 401, and P473. This means that it’s been certified to remove:

  • Chlorine: 96.6%
  • VOCs: 95-99%
  • Chromium-6: 97.2%
  • TDS: 87.1%
  • Cyst: 99.99%
  • Fluoride: 93.5%
  • Lead: 99.1%
  • Radium 226/228: 96.4%
  • BPA: 99%
  • Various trace pharmaceuticals and pesticides: 86.7-96.6%
  • PFOA, PFOS: 97.5%

This is a much more impressive list than that of the EcoPure altogether, although the EcoPure does admittedly have a higher reduction rate for some contaminants.

The AquaTru saves a lot of space thanks to its compact design, and it’s very easy to use. Filtration works very fast, thanks to the built-in pump, which also brings the wastewater ratio down to just 20%. The product is made of BPA and BPS-free Tritan plastic, and it’s more affordable to maintain than the EcoPure at $100 – $120 per year. The only minor flaws we can point out are that it may occasionally stop working prematurely, and it’s more expensive.

Next up, we have the Waterdrop G3, an under sink reverse osmosis system with a tankless design that makes it very compact. It comes with 4 filtration stages, and its performance is backed by extensive testing against NSF standards 42, 53, 58, and 401 – however, it’s only certified against NSF 58. In general, it can address the following contaminants:

  • VOCs: 99%
  • Chlorine: 99%
  • Nitrate: 98%
  • Fluoride: 99%
  • Arsenic: 99%
  • Chromium-6: 99%
  • Lead: 99%
  • PFOA/PFOS: 99%

Like the AquaTru, this model has an internal pump as well, which brings the flow rate up to 0.42 gallons per minute, allowing you to fill a cup of water in just 8 seconds – while only wasting 33% of the input water. This is a bit worse than the AquaTru, but still much better than the EcoPure.

You have a smart faucet that informs you about the current state of your filters, as well as TDS levels, and gives you alerts when it’s time to replace a filter. This should be done every 550 – 2,200 gallons, depending on the type of filter, or 6 – 24 months. The process is very simple, thanks to the twist-screw design of filter cartridges.

The Waterdrop G3 is made of BPA-free plastic, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, as well as a 1-year warranty (which is only valid if you use the device with municipal water though). Maintenance costs are roughly the same as for the EcoPure at around $145 per year. The device may occasionally make strange noises, though that appears to be rare – and it’s not cheap to buy upfront.
