A water cooler dispenser gives you instant access to hot and cold drinking water. No more pitchers crowding your refrigerator because you like a refreshing beverage on a hot summer day. No more standing around waiting for the kettle if you want to enjoy a warming cup of tea.

And although dispensers are most often found in offices, they are becoming increasingly popular for home use.

They are a great solution if you prefer bottled water over tap water, but don’t want to purchase and carry smaller bottles multiple times a week. Plus they encourage us to drink more throughout the day and stay hydrated.

The only problem: How to find the perfect water cooler dispenser? Don’t worry, this buying guide will help you out!

1. Best Water Cooler Dispenser: Avalon (Bottleless + Self Cleaning!)

Avalon Bottleless Water Cooler Dispenser

Our Top #1: Avalon Bottleless Water Cooler Dispenser

Price:$$$
Bottle Size:
Cold Water Temperature: 47 °F
Hot Water Temperature: 185 °F
Child Safety Lock:

Our Rating

Are you looking for the best water cooler and dispenser money can buy? Look no further, because this bottleless, self-cleaning unit by Avalon is the real deal!

Pros

Yes, you read right. This Avalon water cooler dispenser doesn’t rely on water bottles. So basically you get the convenience of using a water cooler, but without the hassle of having to change jugs.

How is that even possible? It’s pretty simple: The unit directly connects to your existing cold water line. No need to worry, the setup is easy and an installation kit with everything you need is part of the package.

You might be thinking, But what about water quality? Good question. A sediment filter and a carbon block filter, both NSF-certified, remove common contaminants including chlorine, lead and cysts. All that is left for you to do is replace the filters whenever the indicator light says so (about every 6 months).

Another advantage of the bottleless system is its self-cleaning function. At the push of a button, ozone will sanitize the water tanks killing any potentially harmful bacteria and biofilm which are often found in water dispensers. After a 90-minute cycle, the ozone is converted into harmless oxygen. It doesn’t get any more convenient than that!

Other features are the built-in nightlight making sure the spouts are clearly visible in the dark and the mandatory child safety lock on the hot water spigot. The classy looking stainless steel front is a real eye-catcher.

How about water temperatures? Cold without the need for adding ice cubes, room temperature, and hot suited for brewing coffee or tea.

Cons

For some users the water dispenser simply stopped working. Others struggled with leaking tanks. Fortunately, there is a built-in leak detector that monitors water flow and prevents flooding.

Our Verdict

This unit is among the most popular hot and cold water dispensers right now. We love the fact that it’s bottleless and self-cleaning, making it way more convenient to use. Definitely our numero uno in its category!

Avalon Dispenser Alternative

If you consider bottleless to be overrated and don’t mind giving your water dispenser a good scrub with every bottle replacement, check out this regular bottom loading water cooler dispenser also by Avalon.

The Runner-Up: Primo 601090 Bottom Load Water Cooler

Price:$$
Bottle Size:3 or 5 gal
Cold Water Temperature: 37 °F
Hot Water Temperature: 198 °F
Child Safety Lock:

Our Rating

Pros

Primo offers a whole range of popular water coolers and dispensers. This compact unit is a bottom loader – easy on your back – that provides cold, cool and piping hot water.

The latter is perfectly suited for making instant meals and tea, plus it’s secured by a family-friendly safety lock to prevent scalding. And the cold water is actually COLD.

You don’t have to use the cold/hot water functions if you don’t want to, though. There’s a switch on the back to turn off either one. You could also deactivate the night light if you want (the LED makes it easy to dispense water at night and when light is low in general).

By the way, the hot water is ready in approx. 15 minutes after you’ve flipped the switch. The cooling process takes a little bit longer: About 1 hour until the water is fully chilled. For both, a green light indicates when the water has reached the desired temperature.

There’s also a red indicator light letting you know when the bottle is empty.

Speaking of bottles, you can use 3-gallon or 5-gallon water jugs to feed the Primo dispenser. They are hidden inside the storage cabinet for a clean look. For replacement, simply open the front panel.

Coupons Included

The company includes coupons for Primo water redeemable at thousands of retail locations nationwide with this water cooler dispenser.

You get 1 free bottle + 1 free refill. The dispenser works with bottled water from other brands too though!

More product features:

  • Stainless steel water reservoirs avoid contamination and provide for clean taste
  • Removable drip tray is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning
  • System is UL verified for safe usage and Energy Star rated which means it’s highly energy efficient and therefore helps you to save money and protect the climate
  • 1 year limited warranty

And lastly, this bottom loading dispenser features a sleek stainless steel design – if you prefer top loading there’s a stainless steel model as well.

Cons

Most users are more than happy with their purchase and don’t have any issues with this water dispenser. However, a few do. Here are their most common complaints:

  • Somewhat noisy when the compressor is running to produce cold water
  • 1 or more of the 3 water dispensers stopped working after several months use; most issues with the cold water
  • No temp difference between the cool and the cold water; they are both cold

Our Verdict

When solid price meets solid performance we usually have a winner. And that’s exactly the case for the Primo 601090 water cooler and dispenser. Backed by dozens of positive customer reviews, it’s one of the best water dispensers for home and commercial use currently on the market. Make sure to check it out!

3. Best for Countertops: Aquverse Bottleless Countertop Hot and Cold Water Dispenser

Aquverse Bottleless Countertop Hot and Cold Electric Water Dispenser

Best Countertop Water Dispenser: Aquverse

Price:$$$
Bottle Size:
Cold Water Temperature: 37 °F
Hot Water Temperature: 194 °F
Child Safety Lock:

Our Rating

Pros

What makes this Aquverse hot and cold water dispenser special is that it’s meant to sit on your countertop. Measuring 17.5 x 10.75 x 17 inches it has a tiny footprint ideal for smaller offices and apartments.

Not only that; it is another bottleless unit which means unlimited fresh water at your fingertips – no more changing out water bottles, even less space occupied, and no ugly water bottle disturbing your view.

But doesn’t bottleless require proper installation? It does. Water has to be routed from your home’s water source (cold water line) into the cooler. No need to worry, sounds more complicated than it really is. The whole process takes about an hour. All materials needed come with the water cooler.

Once everything is set up you can choose between dispensing cold (37 °F) and hot (194 °F) water. Cold water temp is adjustable.

Other advantages are:

  • Dispensed water tastes great thanks to the 304 stainless steel hot and cold water reservoirs and the Everpure 2HL filter cartridge with a capacity of 750 gallons or 12 months
  • Filter is NSF 42 & 53 certified to remove chlorine taste and odor, toxic lead, dangerous cysts
  • Safety lock on the hot water tap
  • UL listed, Energy Star compliant, CSA certified
  • Heating function can be turned off to save energy
  • Warranted for 1 year

Cons

High price is our only complaint.

Our Verdict

If we were to crown the best countertop water dispenser this would be it. Aquverse offers a good product, and customers are highly satisfied too.

Countertop Dispenser Alternative

The Aquverse is not quite within your budget? How about this top loading countertop water dispenser by Avalon?

Next on our list, another Avalon dispenser…

Pros

If the Avalon A1WATERCOOLER dispenser is one thing, it’s cheap (as in affordable).

Still, the unit features a top loading design with sturdy construction perfectly suited for large offices and high-volume use.

Rather than pushing a handle or button, the water cooler works with push-to-drink paddle spouts. Simply press your drinking vessel against one of the paddles and let it fill.

The space below the spouts can easily accommodate a large glass, cup as well as bottles. Water flow is fast and there’s definitely enough cold and hot water storage for a whole family.

On a side note: The tanks are made from stainless steel – anti off-taste.

Last but not least, we have the familiar safety switch to prevent little hands getting burned by hot water. Another switch can be found on the cooler’s backside for turning off the hot/cold water entirely. It’s a convenient solution if you are trying to save on energy.

Cons

Although the Avalon A1WATERCOOLER is available in 2 different colors (black and white), we don’t really like the design. But this is a matter of taste, of course.

A real disadvantage is that the system might actually start leaking from the top after a couple of weeks or months use.

Our Verdict

Hundreds of customers have voted for the Avalon A1WATERCOOLER dispenser. Although we are not 100% convinced at this point, it’s a solid option for smaller budgets. Taking into account the relatively low purchase price we rate it with 4 out of 5 stars.

5. Primo Porcelain Top Loading Water Dispenser + Small Wood Stand

Primo Porcelain Water Dispenser with Wood Stand (Non-Electric)

Primo Porcelain Top Load Water Dispenser with Mini Wood Stand

Price:$
Bottle Size:3 or 5 gal
Cold Water Temp:
Hot Water Temp:
Child Safety Lock:

Our Rating

We thought, why not include a non-electric, ceramic water dispenser in our buying guide? A water dispenser that comes with a small wooden stand to place on your countertop…

Pros

Obviously, the Primo porcelain crock can serve room temperature water only. So if you are looking for an electric unit to cool your water, this is not it. The upside is that you can place it wherever you like, even outside.

That said, the dispenser supports both 3/5 gallon water jugs (a 1-gallon water bottle would fall in).

It uses a push tab that nicely blends with the overall classic design. The ceramic body is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.

As mentioned in the headline, the package also features a wooden stand which elevates the unit allowing you to fill tall glasses and other containers with ease.

And again, coupons for Primo water are included.

FYI: You don’t have to use Primo refills.

Cons

The biggest issue with the Primo porcelain water dispenser is leaking – leaking from the spout, from the gasket, or where the bottle connects with the dispenser. 1 customer even had the impression that the porcelain itself was not properly sealed.

To prevent water from flooding your home, check the gaskets on the inside and outside. Can you see any cracks? How about the spigot? It might also help to remove the gaskets and retighten them. If it’s still leaking, pay a visit to your local hardware store and get replacements.

We also read reports from reviewers having received Primo Water coupons that had already expired. Others said their crock was cracked on arrival.

In case the ceramic has a chemical smell to it you should clean it thoroughly before first use.

Our Verdict

All in all, the majority of people are satisfied with their purchase – there is not much to go wrong, really. The price seems reasonable for the quality provided. 4 stars!

6. Brio CLBL520SC Bottom Load + Self Cleaning Water Cooler Dispenser

Brio CLBL520SC Self Cleaning Water Cooler Dispenser

Brio CLBL520SC

Price:$$$
Water Bottles:3 or 5 gal
Cold Water Temp: 37 °F
Hot Water Temp: 198 °F
Child Safety Lock:

Our Rating

Pros

Bottom loading for no heavy lifting, three temperature settings – ice cold (37-50 °F), room, piping hot (176-198 °F) – to choose from, rapid flow, and quiet operation. These features are pretty standard for most high-end water cooler dispensers. But there’s one aspect that separates the Brio CLBL520SC from the rest:

The system is self cleaning for maximum water safety and convenience.

Furthermore, we have lights indicating when the hot or cold water is ready. Another light starts flashing whenever it’s time for a new water bottle (3 or 5 gallons) so you never run dry. We also like the nightlight that allows you to see what is being poured when light is dim.

And yes, all of the above features can be turned on/off individually.

Also worth mentioning are the two-step child-safety lock to prevent accidental pouring of hot water, the UL listing which guarantees the safety of the user, Energy Star approval, and NSF 372 lead-free material compliance.

Did we mention that the Brio CLBL520SC is warranted for 1 year (limited)?

Cons

A handful of people complained that the cold water dispenser stopped working out of nowhere or the entire machine just died. Others said their system is noisy. With that in mind, Brio’s customer support can be hard to get hold of sometimes.

Our Verdict

The Brio CLBL520SC Water Cooler Dispenser works exactly as advertised. It has a clean design, it’s quiet, and it’s self cleaning. On top of that, it’s a best seller on the Amazon marketplace and backed by hundreds of positive reviews.

Brio Alternative

No need for self cleaning? The Brio CLBL420V2 is pretty much identical to the Brio CLBL520SC only without the cleaning feature.

7. Rinkmo BY530 Water Cooler & Bottom Load Water Dispenser with UV-Light Purification

Rinkmo BY530 Water Cooler Dispenser with UV-Light Purification

Rinkmo BY530 Water Cooler & Bottom Load Water Dispenser with UV-Light Purification

Price:$$$
Water Jugs:3 or 5 gal
Cold Water Temp: ≤50 °F
Hot Water Temp: ≥194 °F
Child-Safety Button:

Our Rating

Pros

The Rinkmo BY530 is another water cooler and bottom load water dispenser advertised as “self cleaning“. But actually, the unit uses UV light to not only sterilize its water lines and tanks, it also purifies the water itself killing any bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts. Thus, you get an extra layer of safety for your drinking water.

Apropos safety, the Rinkmo water dispenser has earned plenty of safety certifications: ETL, CAS, FDA, CE and CB. One part of the equation is the 304 stainless steel heating tank resistant to corrosion. The frame is also made from steel for longevity.

Hot water lock? Check. Product warranty? 2 years!

Other than that, the Rinkmo water dispenser is compatible with 3 and 5 gallon water bottles – an indicator light will tell you when it’s time for a replacement. The nightlight allows you to use the spouts in the dark, which can be operated by only one hand. And, most importantly, you have the choice between 3 water temperatures:

  1. Room
  2. Cold (≤ 50 °F; .8 gallons storage; can be turned off)
  3. Hot (≥ 194 °F; 0.26 gallons storage; can be turned off)

Cons

The Rinkmo BY530 water cooler and bottom load water dispenser is pricier than you would expect. Also, there have been quality issues, first and foremost with the water temperatures.

Our Verdict

The reason we find the Rinkmo BY530 interesting is its UV light water purification feature. We couldn’t find that with any of the other systems we reviewed. It’s worth looking into for sure. 4 stars!

8. Brio Water Cooler Dispenser with Ultra Safe Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filter

Brio Water Cooler Dispenser with Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filter

Brio with Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filter

Price:$$$
Bottle Size:
Cold Water Temp: ?
Hot Water Temp: ?
Child-Safety Button:

Our Rating

Pros

You already know about the important features most Brio water coolers come with such as self cleaning, 3 temperature settings, built-in nightlight, etc. (see above).

What’s new with this model is the combination of bottleless cooler with reverse osmosis filtration technology for unlimited access to filtered water. There’s no heavy lifting involved. All you have to do is change the filters about every 3 to 6 months or 950 gallons which is child’s play.

More details about the filtration process:

  • Removes up to 99.9% impurities
  • 4 filter stages
    1. Sediment pre-filter traps larger particles down to a size of 5 micron, i.e. rust
    2. Granular activated carbon pre-filter eliminates chlorine, VOCs and other chemicals
    3. RO membrane filters contaminants like heavy metals, salts, fluoride, arsenic, viruses…
    4. Coconut shell carbon post-filter removes any residual tastes and odors

Of course, just like the Avalon Bottleless Water Cooler Dispenser, this unit needs to be hooked up to a cold water line (preferably tap water). In addition, since reverse osmosis produces waste water, a drain connection is required.

Cons

We are not sure where to purchase replacements filters and we couldn’t find any information about how much they cost.

Our Verdict

Water as clean as it gets, great taste and fast production. The Brio reverse osmosis water cooler and dispenser was designed to provide all that and then some. Only the higher price tag is not ideal for people on a budget.

9. Costway 2-in-1 Top Loading Water Cooler Dispenser with Built-In Ice Maker

Costway 2-in-1 Freestanding Water Dispenser with Built-In Ice Maker

Costway 2-in-1 Top Load Water Dispenser with Built-In Ice Maker

Price:$$$
Water Jugs:3 or 5 gal
Cold Water Temp: ?
Hot Water Temp: ?
Child-Safety Button:

Our Rating

Pros

The Costway water cooler dispenser is a 2-in-1 system:

  1. It provides cold, room temperature and hot water – nothing new here.
  2. The control panel lets you turn on the built-in ice maker. Capacity: 27 lbs within 24 hours (or 9 pieces of ice in between 7 to 15 minutes)

By the way, the cool water capacity is roughly 1 gallon per hour. The capacity for hot water is a little bit more, about 1.3 gal.

The ice storage can hold 4 lbs which is enough to make cocktails for you and your friends, and a neat little ice scoop is part of the delivery.

Also, the water barrel seat and drip tray are detachable for easy cleaning. Child safety lock on the hot water spout? You bet!

Cons

Someone said the hot water is not quite hot enough for tea. Another person said the hot water is perfect, but the cold leaves something to be desired.

What we know is the ice is not solid frozen and the storage cannot keep the temperature below the melting point. So you basically have to scoop out the ice and put it in your freezer.

Bad news is, this won’t help with the humming noise… or the high price tag.

Our Verdict

A solid 3.5 stars for a decent product with good customer support.

10. Primo hTRIO 5-Gallon Water Dispenser Compatible with K-Cups®

Primo hTRIO Water Dispenser Cooler with K-Cups® Machine

Primo hTRIO Water Dispenser Compatible with K-Cups®

Price:$$
Water Jugs:3 or 5 gal

Hot Water Temp: ?
Child-Safety Button:

Our Rating

Pros

This easy to use hot and cold water dispenser is compatible with K-Cups®.

In other words, simply insert a pod into the drawer of the built-in K-cup® machine – you can also use the included reusable coffee filter with your own coffee grounds – slide the drawer back in, and press one of the serving size buttons: 6, 8 or 10 ounces. And voila, here is your freshly brewed cup of coffee.

In addition, there is storage for 20 cups at the top. This is possible since we are talking about a bottom loader for easy bottle replacing.

Other pros are the LED nightlight and the child safety lock to prevent hot water accidents.

Cons

With up to 5 gallons of water at your demand you can brew cup after cup of steaming hot coffee, right? Unfortunately no. After 2x 10 oz servings you need to wait exactly 12 minutes for more hot water to be produced. Of course, this also goes for the hot water dispenser.

Another issue: Some people seem to go through their unit(s) rather quickly. A few are on their 3rd cooler already with machines breaking down after a mere three weeks.

And lastly, a minor problem is that the water pump (is it the pump?) is a bit loud.

Our Verdict

The fact that this cold/hot water dispenser makes coffee brewing so much easier is a huge plus! However, we have to deduct points for apparent soft- or hardware errors causing systems to fail way ahead of time. In the end, it’s 3 stars from us.

Buying Guide – What You Need To Consider When Buying a Water Cooler Dispenser

Water coolers and water dispensers are actually two different types of products. A simple dispenser doesn’t cool water. But because everyone uses the terms synonymously, we don’t distinguish between them here.

To get the best value for money when buying a water cooler dispenser for your home or office, consider this:

  • Bottom Loading vs. Top Loading vs. Bottleless – Bottom load water dispensers don’t require heavy lifting and are thus perfect for single moms and the elderly. Above that, they hide the bulky water jug in their bottom storage cabinet for better looks. Top load units are usually more affordable. Bottleless dispensers provide you with unlimited access to refreshing drinking water without the need to buy water bottles ever again. In order to guarantee safety for your health, though, they have to feature a thorough filtration process.
  • Leaks – Many water coolers have issues with leaks – more than you would think. Nothing is more frustrating than coming home from work one day only to find water all over the floor. Our tip: Carefully read what people already using a certain product say about it.
  • Safety Lock – For families with small kids, a safety lock is the best precaution against hot water accidents.
  • Taste – Believe it or not, there are systems that store the cold and hot water in cheap plastic containers. This will often result in a funny plastic taint. The best solution: Stainless steel reservoirs.
  • Self Cleaning – Self cleaning units use ozone or ultraviolet light to kill bacteria in their water tanks and lines. It’s not a must, but a nice-to-have.
  • Water Temperatures – In some instances, actual hot or cold water temperatures may differ from seller/manufacturer specifications.
  • Water Flow Rate – Sufficient water flow is important especially for high volume usage in offices. You don’t want to spend hours filling a medium-sized pitcher.
  • Noise – Bottom load water coolers require a pump which may be loud while operating. Another potential source for disturbing sounds is the compressor.
  • Energy Efficiency a.k.a. Saving MoneyEnergy Star approved water cooler dispensers help you save in the long run and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. Better to spend your money on more fun stuff than electricity…
  • Space – It might seem obvious, but remember that you have to have enough space to accommodate a cooler plus the bottle on top if it’s top loading.

More on Water Cooler Dispensers

In section 1, we reviewed some the best water coolers on the market. Next, we are going to tackle common questions our readers have about them.

Water Cooler Dispenser Companies, Brands & Manufacturers

By far the biggest manufacturer on the water cooler/dispenser market is the Whirlpool Corporation.

Other brands and companies that you might stumble upon searching for the best water dispenser include Primo, Avalon, Brio and Costway (see reviews above).

In terms of quality, we really like Avalon. Primo and Aquverse are good, too.

If you are on a budget you might be better off with a lesser known brand.

Water Dispensers: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Which is better, top or bottom loading water cooler?
They’re both easy to use. However, we prefer a bottom load water cooler because changing jugs is a piece of cake. It simply goes into the storage cabinet. Replacing bottles on a top load water cooler is more complicated.
  • Are water coolers sanitary?
You need to clean them regularly to make sure they are.
  • What features should I look for in a water cooler?
Most importantly, you need to choose between the 3 types: Bottom loading, top loading or bottleless.
  • Is a water dispenser worth it?
In our opinion, their most important advantage is convenience. But generally speaking, we prefer to do our own filtration.
