Express Water RO5DX – Key Features

Let’s start with the most important aspect first: The process the Express Water RO5DX applies in order to purify water.

  • Stage 1: At stage 1, unfiltered water passes through a 5-micron sediment pre-filter, which traps dirt, dust, sand, rust, etc. The goal here is to protect the subsequent filter stages from clogging to extend their life, and save you time and money.
  • Stages 2/3: First we have a granular activated carbon filter, followed by a carbon block. They reduce chlorine, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), pesticides, and other organic chemicals. Water taste and odor also improve a lot at this stage. As an additional benefit, removing chlorine helps to keep the RO membrane in good shape. Speaking of…
  • Stage 4: A semipermeable reverse osmosis membrane separates all the remaining harmful contaminants – think lead, arsenic, chromium, fluoride, overall TDS – from the water molecules.
  • Stage 5: The last stage is an activated carbon post-filter that eliminates any residual taste/smell after the water has been stored in the tank and right before it comes out of the RO faucet.

In summary, we have the typical filter process applied by most under sink reverse osmosis systems, and you can expect solid filtration results – more on this below. By the way, all activated carbon is 100% derived from coconut shells.

What else is there to mention? For one, the Express Water RO5DX is highly affordable – not only to buy but also to maintain (around $60 in annual filter replacement cost). Plus, as of writing this review Express Water includes a free replacement filter set as part of the package.

Filter life: 6 months for the pre-filters, and 12 months for the RO membrane and carbon post-filter.

Express Water 5-Stage Pros

There are a few more things that we like about this Express Water 5-stage reverse osmosis system:

  • Flow from the RO faucet is quite fast. At 0.8 gallons per minute, you can fill a glass in under 5 seconds, says Express Water.
  • Thanks to color-coded tubing and quick-connect fittings, you can do the system installation yourself, provided you are handy with tools.
  • The emergency leak stop detector brings peace of mind. It’ll shut off the water flow whenever it detects moisture underneath the system.
  • You get a 1-year limited warranty.
  • You get lifetime expert support from certified water technicians.

What Contaminants Are Being Removed?

Express Water provides the following contaminant reduction rates which apparently have been tested against NSF Standards 42, 58, and 401:

  • 99.83% fluoride
  • 98.62% chlorine
  • 99.68% chloramine
  • 98-99% nitrate and nitrite
  • up to 99.99% of dozens of VOCs
  • up to 99% of dozens of semi-volatiles
  • up to 99.99% of pharmaceuticals
  • 99.37% lead, 96.55% cadmium, 99.63% chromium, and other metals
  • 95.4% TDS

That said, these rates don’t seem to be for the RO5DX model specifically. Express Water provides the same rates for other RO models, too, like their Elite system.

Installation

Express Water promotes the RO5DX by saying that there is no need to “waste money on professional installation – Our quick and easy to understand design means you can install and understand everything about your system“.

And it’s true, we have a detailed instruction booklet that offers colored illustrations and diagrams to aid you in the setup process. What’s more, we have a color-matched quick connect system that tells you which hose goes where at a glance. Plus each connection that needs to be made is labeled on the unit itself.

All in all, in our opinion, if you have the patience that’s required to set up this system, there’s no need to call for a plumber. Just don’t underestimate the scope of the project. By the way, all adapters are included, so there’s no need for you to visit to the local hardware store.

Here are the steps to install the Express Water RO5DX – but of course, make sure to check your manual for a more detailed, step-by-step guide!

Please consider these instructions as a general guideline. Always make sure to check and follow your user manual before getting started.
  1. Connect the feed water adapter valve.
  2. Drill a hole for the reverse osmosis faucet, or locate an existing hole that can be reused.
  3. Install the reverse osmosis faucet, paying attention to the correct ordering of the different part layers according to the exact model you’re using.
  4. Find a good place for the drain saddle – it should be above the P-trap, and not downstream from a garbage disposal unit if you have one.
  5. Carefully align the two parts of the drain saddle clamp around the pipe, mark the location for a hole, and drill a hole through the pipe.
  6. Install the automatic shutoff valve.
  7. Keep the filters wrapped in their plastic covers until you’re ready to install them. Once you’re ready, remove the plastic housings and avoid touching the filters with your bare hands. Don’t wipe off the food-grade lubricant already applied to the O-rings. Make sure there are two O-rings at the top of each housing and in its lower groove.
  8. Install the leak stop valve.
  9. Hook up the water storage tank.
  10. Check for leaks.

Maintenance

Not much to say here. Filter changes are quick and easy. You can use the extra wrenches to open the housings. But make sure to have a bucket at hand to prevent water spilling all over the floor.

Here’s how often you will have to change each filtration component as per manufacturer specifications:

  • Sediment pre-filter: About every 6 months
  • Carbon pre-filter: About every 6 months
  • GAC pre-filter: About every 6 months
  • RO membrane: About every 12 months
  • Carbon post-filter: About every 6-12 months

The good news is that you can get replacement filters at Walmart, Home Depot, and a handful of other big retail stores located near you.

Annual replacement costs are highly affordable, too, at around $60. And if you subscribe to receive new filters on schedule, you can save even more. And don’t forget that one set of replacement filters is already included in the package!

Below or sample instructions for how to replace the pre-filters. For all other instructions, check your manual:

  1. Turn off the cold water supply.
  2. Open the RO faucet to release water pressure.
  3. Once the water flow stops, close the faucet and also the tank valve.
  4. Unscrew the filter housings using the filter wrench. Discard of the old filter cartridges.
  5. Wash each housing with dish soap.
  6. Properly install the new filter elements in their correct housing, and screw the housings back on. Tighten with the wrench.
  7. Open the feed water supply.
  8. Open the RO faucet and wait until water starts flowing. Allow the water to run for around 30 minutes.
  9. Open the tank valve. Give the tank time to fill.
  10. Drain the entire RO system by opening the Faucet until the water flow is reduced to a slow trickle.
  11. Flush the system 4 times in total.

Express Water RO5DX RO Cons

Okay, so what do we not like about the Express Water RO5DX 5-Stage Reverse Osmosis System?

  • First of all, some customers complained about missing parts upon delivery. At least the support team is quick to respond, which means that you should receive the parts 2-3 days later. In addition, you have to exercise caution after the installation when turning on the water for the first time. Leaking valves and other connections are not uncommon. Make sure to seat the tubes fully into the fittings. At some point they may seem to stop, but chances are that they aren’t far enough yet, so try to press a little harder.
  • The system is NSF Standard 58 certified but for TDS reduction only. We would have liked additional NSF certifications for more contaminants.
  • It seems like the company is providing a general list of contaminant reduction rates for all of its products, so it’s hard to tell if the list actually corresponds to the range of contaminants addressed by this model.
  • And let’s not forget the high wastewater ratio. The Express Water system wastes up to 3-5 gallons of water for each gallon purified. Although this is the standard ratio for systems of this kind, it is still a lot.
  • Compared to newer-style under sink RO systems, the RO5DX tends to clutter kitchen sink cabinets due to all the exposed components like filter housings and tubing.
  • Some users report issues with the flow rate.

Express Water RO5DX Review: Our Verdict + Best for

The Express Water RO5DX 5-Stage Reverse Osmosis System is affordable, easy to install, and easy to maintain. Plus, it seemingly offers a thorough filtration process. However, we would have appreciated additional NSF certifications and other more detailed information about the unit’s performance. All in all, 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Filtration Performance: 4.0/5.0
  • Filter Capacity (Life): 4.5/5.0

The Waterdrop G3 (full review here) is a tankless under sink RO system, filtering water on demand without storing it. It’s certified against NSF standard 58, and is additionally tested against NSF standards 42, 53, 58, and 401. With that in mind, the system can address the following contaminants, among others:

  • VOCs: 99%
  • Chlorine: 99%
  • Nitrate: 98%
  • Fluoride: 99%
  • Arsenic: 99%
  • Chromium-6: 99%
  • Lead: 99%
  • PFOA/PFOS: 99%

The flow rate of 0.42 gallons per minute is quite okay, and the unit only wastes 33% of the input water thanks to the internal pump. This is much better than the 60-80% wastewater ratio of the Express Water RO5DX. The unit takes around 8 seconds to fill a cup of water.

Installation is very easy, and maintenance is a piece of cake thanks mainly to two factors: the built-in indicator system that tracks the status of your filters, and the streamlined filter replacement procedure that doesn’t require any tools. Filters last for between 550 and 2,200 gallons of water, which means you’ll have to replace them every 6-24 months. The monitoring system also informs you about your current TDS levels.

Also, the Waterdrop G3 is built from BPA-free materials, and the company offers a money-back satisfaction guarantee if you return your product within the first 30 days after your purchase. You are also covered by a limited 1-year warranty.

This kind of performance doesn’t come cheaply though, as the Waterdrop G3 costs more than the Express Water RO5DX, both to purchase and to maintain. Some users have also reported occasional strange noises, though we haven’t experienced that ourselves.

The AquaTru is another great choice if you’re looking for a reverse osmosis water filter system that’s simple to install, use, and maintain. It comes with a 4-stage filtration process certified for the removal of more than 80 contaminants, and with specific NSF certifications for standards 42, 53, 58, 401, and P473. Here are some of the contaminants addressed:

  • Chlorine: 96.6%
  • VOCs: 95-99%
  • Chromium-6: 97.2%
  • TDS: 87.1%
  • Cyst: 99.99%
  • Fluoride: 93.5%
  • Lead: 99.1%
  • Radium 226/228: 96.4%
  • BPA: 99%
  • Various trace pharmaceuticals and pesticides: 86.7-96.6%
  • PFOA, PFOS: 97.5%

System design is very compact and streamlined, saving a lot of space while still filtering very fast. The AquaTru also has a pretty good recovery rate of 80%, which is much better than both the Express Water RO5DX and the Waterdrop G3 – that’s mainly due to the internal pump.

The model also uses BPA- and BPS-free materials, specifically Tritan plastic. And even though some users report minor occasional leaks or premature breakdowns, that hasn’t been our experience. The AquaTru costs more than the Express Water RO5DX to purchase upfront, though it has roughly the same annual maintenance costs of $100 – $120.

We favor the AquaTru in this comparison, as it offers a great balance of features, price, and reliability. The Waterdrop G3 is a close contender due to its overall design and fast operation, as well as its good recovery rate. If you’re more limited in your budget, the Express Water RO5DX can still make a good choice, but you should expect some decline in performance compared to the other two options.
