What Is a Reverse Osmosis System and How Does it Work?

Reverse osmosis systems filter water using the principle of reverse osmosis – who would have guessed!

An RO system typically consists of pre-filters that remove large impurities and chlorine, the semipermeable RO membrane, and post-filters that improve the water’s taste and smell.

At the heart of any reverse osmosis system. a semipermeable membrane is put under high water pressure. The RO membrane has pores that are as tiny as 0.0001 microns. The pores block any impurities like lead, arsenic, bacteria, pesticides, all kinds of salts, and many more. Only water molecules are allowed to pass through. Clean, filtered water collects on the other side of the membrane and continues its journey through the filtration system.
