A reverse osmosis (RO) system is a water filter designed to remove contaminants from water using reverse osmosis technology. RO technology forces pressurized water through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane rejects contaminants, letting only pure water molecules pass through.
An RO system typically features four stages of filtration and sometimes more. Usually, it includes:
- Two pre-filters: There’s a sediment pre-filter for trapping sand, silt, debris, and other impurities that may float around in your water, and then a carbon pre-filter that removes chlorine and organics. These two filters are very important because they protect the membrane from damage and lower its workload.
- The reverse osmosis membrane: This is the third stage in an RO system. The semipermeable RO membrane has pores as tiny as 0.0001 microns.
- Post-filter: Carbon post-filters usually make up the last filtration stage. They give water a final polish, improving its taste and smell. Sometimes, remineralization filters are included in the setup to add minerals back to the water.
Osmosis vs Reverse Osmosis
To understand reverse osmosis, you have to grasp the concept of osmosis. Osmosis is a natural process where water moves from a solution of low solute concentration to one of higher solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane in a bid to equalize the concentrations on both sides.
Reverse osmosis is the opposite or reverse of that process. However, to reverse the osmosis process, you need energy to go against the natural order; hence pressure is applied in reverse osmosis. This is why low pressure in your home leads to your RO system not functioning properly.
