Epic Nano – Key Features

The Epic Nano Water Filter Pitcher comes in blue and navy black.

It filters water using a combination of a coconut shell carbon block and proprietary filter media (mostly ion exchange) combined with submicron filtration. This makes it ideal for filtering well water.

The Epic Nano has a total storage volume of 14.8 cups and a filtered water capacity of 8.5 cups. As such, it’s good for family use yet still compact enough to fit in your refrigerator. The pitcher is also designed with a flip-top lid that allows for one-handed refilling.

Filter life? A comfortable 150 gallons (or 3-4 months). Additionally, an LED timer counts down from 90 days, ensuring you never miss a filter replacement date.

Side note: There’s also the Epic Pure Water Filter Pitcher (it works best for heavy metal and fluoride-contaminated tap water). Epic Pure and Nano filter cartridges are interchangeable, so you can swap them later on.

Epic Nano Filter Pitcher Pros

There’s a lot to love about the Epic Nano filter pitcher:

  • It greatly improves water aesthetics and eliminates harmful pollutants including certain microorganisms.
  • It has been tested by third-party labs for the removal of over 200 contaminants – quite impressive for a filter pitcher.
  • After filtration, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and other healthy minerals are left in your water, contributing to your daily recommended intake.
  • The Epic Nano pitcher was cleverly thought out. If you look in the upper reservoir, you’ll notice an integrated barrier that prevents unfiltered water from spilling while you pour.
  • It’s relatively affordable to maintain (maintenance costs about $90 to $135 yearly). Plus, the filters are 100% recyclable. When you mail four used filters to Epic, you get a new replacement filter for free.
  • If you subscribe to the Clean Water Club, you get replacement filters automatically delivered at a discount (20% off).
  • The pitcher is made in the USA with BPA/BPS-free materials, so you don’t have to worry about unpleasant effects like genetic mutation.
  • Epic offers a lifetime warranty and a satisfaction guarantee – if you’re unsatisfied with the pitcher, you can return it and get a 100% refund.
  • Epic gives special discounts to students, teachers, first-responders, military personnel, medical staff, seniors, and owners and employees of non-profit organizations.

Assembly and Filter Priming

The Epic Nano is easy to assemble. Here’s how to do it:

Please consider these instructions as a general guideline. Always make sure to check and follow your user manual before getting started.
  1. Confirm that the clear silicone gasket is properly positioned before use.
  2. Hand wash the jug and other filter components with mild detergent (only use non-abrasive cleaners). Wipe the lid with a soft sponge and vinegar solution (1 teaspoon white vinegar to one cup of water) and rinse properly (do not wash the filter with soap).
  3. Fix the filter back in the reservoir (it’s okay if the reservoir holes don’t line up with the filter holes. Just ensure the lid fits properly on the jug).
  4. Pour cold water into the reservoir and prime the filter by throwing out the first two jugs of filtered water (you could also use them on houseplants to avoid waste).
  5. Press start on the digital timer to start the filter countdown (hold the timer down until it flashes to 90).
  6. Your pitcher is ready for use!

Maintenance

Maintaining this pitcher is stress-free and relatively cheap (~$90-135 yearly). Epic recommends that if your cartridge still works after 6 months, you should change it regardless.

This is the estimated filter life according to the number of users:

  • One user: 4 to 5 months
  • Two users: 3 to 4 months,
  • Family: 2 to 3 months.

When adding your replacement filter, push the start button for 8 seconds until the display stops flashing. This resets the system and restarts the timer.

NSF and Other Certifications

The Epic Nano has no official NSF certifications, but it’s been third-party tested against NSF standards 42, 53, 401, and P231.

Earlier Product Versions

The Epic Nano has had some earlier versions. The design and other features have changed over time.

Epic Nano Pitcher Cons

The Epic Nano Pitcher has its downsides. Most noticeable is that it usually takes 10-15 minutes to filter one refill. However, for some people refills take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1-2 hours (on the one hand this is good so the water has a longer contact time with the filter media for more effective filtration, but it doesn’t make it any less annoying).

Some people have also complained about filtration rates slowing down after a few weeks of using the filter. This means more frequent filter replacements, which adds to the overall maintenance costs.

Other recorded mishaps include the pitcher’s top coming off when you pour and the flip lid getting stuck. Some people have equally complained that the pitcher is made with too-fragile material.

And while the NSF testing is very thorough, we would have preferred official NSF certifications.

Finally, while the Epic pitcher is relatively affordable, it’s still priced higher than many competitors.

There’s also its unrivaled warranty and return policy, long filter life, and so much more. It’s definitely worth the money. Our verdict? 4.5 stars!

The Clearly Filtered Pitcher (fully reviewed) is a high-grade model. It’s been tested/certified against NSF standards (42, 53, 401), with results proving its effectiveness. The pitcher removes over 365 water contaminants, including pesticides, chloramine, chlorine, VOCs, DBPs, lead, arsenic, semi-volatile compounds, chromium-6, fluoride, PFAS, radiologicals, and pharmaceuticals.

The pitcher filters water using different proprietary filter media and granular activated carbon. This effective combo targets a broad range of contaminants. So while the Epic Nano notably excels at removing microorganisms, the Clearly Filtered removes a lot more contaminant types.

It has a filter life of 4 months (or 100 gallons). This filter life is possibly less than what you’d expect from Epic, but it depends on your water conditions.

The CF Pitcher also has a total storage of 17 cups and 10 cups filtered volume – a bit larger than Epic. It features a removable lid for easy refilling and is made in the USA with 100% BPA-free material.

Clearly Filtered offers a limited lifetime warranty and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee – Epic outperforms it here.

The biggest con with the Clearly Filtered Pitcher is that it’s slightly more expensive to buy and maintain than the Epic pitcher.

Bottom line: The Clearly Filtered is our first choice, but the Epic Nano is a very close favorite. If you’re on a budget, the Epic pitcher is the obvious choice. However, if you can afford it, go all in for the Clearly Filtered!
