An overall simple water filter pitcher suitable for basic water filtration, the HDX Water Filter Pitcher has several notable features, including a 4-stage filtration setup that targets various contaminants, and a lightweight, compact design that makes the unit very portable. You can also wash this pitcher in a dishwasher, unlike some other models out there.
The 4 filtration stages are ordered as follows:
- Micro net, which removes large floating particles.
- Silver activated carbon, which deals with chlorine taste and odor as well as various organic chemicals.
- Ion exchange resin, which removes salts, heavy metals, and similar contaminants.
- Micro net, another layer to further reduce floating debris.
One replacement filter can last for up to two months or 40 gallons of water, whichever limit is hit first. The package includes two filter cartridges.

Assembly and Filter Priming
Putting the HDX pitcher together is very easy and doesn’t involve any special tools or procedures. You simply take it out of the package, prime and install the first filter, and you’re ready to use it.
To prime a filter cartridge, you should:

- Flush the cartridge with water for at least 15 seconds.
- Insert the cartridge into the reservoir, pressing firmly down on it.
- Fill the pitcher with water all the way, let it run through the cartridge, then discard it.
- Repeat the above step two more times.
- You’re ready to use your pitcher!

Maintenance
Maintaining the HDX Water Filter Pitcher doesn’t take a lot of effort. Basically, you need to remember to swap out the filter cartridge on a regular basis.
We couldn’t find any official replacement cartridges from HDX itself. According to our research, you can use regular Brita filters instead – meaning that you can expect roughly the same lifespan as the filters you’re purchasing. This does raise the question of whether you should simply buy a Brita filter to begin with. Brita Elite filters need to be replaced once every 120 gallons of filtered water. Replacement filters add up to about $60 per year, which is reasonable.
When you’re taking out the old filter cartridge, you can also use the opportunity to wash your entire pitcher. To do that:
- Use warm, soapy water to scrub the inside and outside of the pitcher.
- Rinse the pitcher thoroughly with cold water.
- Pay attention to the openings through which water flows – make sure no soapy residue is left there.
- Prime and install your new cartridge.
- Close the pitcher, and you’re ready to use it.

This pitcher has no official certifications, NSF or otherwise. This means that none of the manufacturer’s claims about purification capabilities have actually been put to the test. Keep that in mind if you’re looking for a pitcher that can cover a specific range of contaminants.

There are no earlier versions of the HDX Water Filter Pitcher, as far as we can tell.
HDX Water Pitcher Cons
- Very limited product information provided by the manufacturer, especially when it comes to contaminant reduction rates.
- HDX doesn’t seem to offer any replacement filters itself, though the model is apparently compatible with Brita filters.
- No specific information about filter lifespan, other than what’s already provided by Brita itself.

The Clearly Filtered Pitcher is an especially good choice if you’re looking for the best quality on the market, and a proven product from a manufacturer with a long track record on the market. It comes with multiple NSF certification/testing standards, including 42, 53, and 401, and is capable of removing more than 300 contaminants. And unlike the HDX Water Filter Pitcher, those claims are backed up by real data. Some of the contaminants removed by the Clearly Filtered Pitcher include chlorine, chloramine, DBPs, lead, chromium-6, arsenic, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, PFAS, fluoride, and many others.
This model is also better in terms of filter lifespan, as it allows you to filter about 100 gallons of water, or use it for 4 months. You can store 10 cups of filtered water like in the HDX Water Filter Pitcher, so there’s no advantage there.
What’s especially good about the Clearly Filtered Pitcher is that the manufacturer is very open about its production process and quality control. The pitchers are made in the USA and come with a limited lifetime warranty, as well as a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. However, be prepared to pay more – this is a premium product.
Then we have the Epic Pure/Nano, which is more suitable for those on a more limited budget who still want a comprehensive water purification solution for their homes. The two models are aimed at different contaminants – Epic Pure is mostly about dealing with fluoride and heavy metals, while Epic Nano (reviewed here) effectively removes various microorganisms (great for well water). What’s great about these models is that their filter cartridges are interchangeable, so you are not limited to the capabilities of the model you’ve bought initially.
Epic Pure and Nano can remove more than 200 contaminants, including chlorine, fluoride, nitrate, chloramine, sulfate, arsenic, cadmium, chromium-6, lead, mercury, VOCs, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and more. The product comes with NSF standards 42, 53, and 401, as well as P231 for the Nano.
If you’re looking for long filter life, that’s definitely the right choice for you, with a cartridge that can last for up to 150 gallons – that’s even better than the Clearly Filtered! Even better, if you gather four used filter cartridges and send them back to the manufacturer, you’ll get a free one in return! On top of that, Epic pitchers come with an integrated countdown timer which lets you know when it’s time for a filter replacement.
